Sarah Elizabeth Hicks
Sarah Elizabeth Hicks grew up in Kent, England along the southeast coast. She began painting at a very early age. After winning the sixth form art prize and the Sheila Marshall award from the Thanet decorative and fine arts society, she soon realized her love and talent for the arts.
In 2000 she took a foundation course in art and design at KIAD (Kent institute of Art and Design) with a fraction of the class being in Barcelona, Spain. She then went on to study at Arizona State University where she received a bachelor of fine arts degree in printmaking. After taking a number of different classes she discovered her true love was for painting. She has had a number of solo shows in Phoenix Arizona. Sarah Elizabeth is now a full time freelance artist working on various commission projects and constantly experimenting with her style and subject matter.
Colour, line and mark making are the subject of Sarah Elizabeth’s abstract paintings. The use of simple geometric shapes express the impressions and feelings of the scene or point she is trying to portray. Her subjects are chosen by what captures her imagination from daily scenes and still life’s, to capturing a moment or memory of a place she has been. The choice of colours and the effects that marks and textures have on the canvas catch the viewer’s eye, drawing them in. The paint creates gorgeous, thick, vibrant colours allowing her to layer, scratch, scrap and drip the acrylics. The gestural expressive brush strokes also represent this, enhancing the structure and mood of the painting. The mark making and the gestural line emphasize the energy and movement throughout the scenes of the paintings, capturing emotions and thoughts and holding them frozen in time.
