Ray Pila

christmaslrgI was born and raised in Kaipiolani in Oahu, then raised in Kona, Hawaii. For about the last 5 years I had wanted to become a freelance graphic designer. I had enough experience behind me – I was confident from College and having some experience from being top in my class. I did some really great jobs, with wonderful clients. So what had stopped me? FEAR.

Even though I had swapped jobs about every few years as I got bored, I could not quite get up the courage to lose that regular guaranteed wage. Of course the more design experience I got the better the wage and the more reluctant I became. When my ambitions were strong and I Finished College. I was proficient in oil painting, art history theory, graphic design, illustration and photography.

Art is rewarding, I enjoy creating art. I find life to be a daily conquest of doing good and giving to others, sometimes you have to be thankful for what you have. I can honestly say I have not regretted it.

Yes there are times when I have quiet periods, and times when I tear my hair out I am so busy, but I organise my own time, mostly work from home and if you do well you know its good for you. Work for yourself and you are in full control, you know the financial situation you have the ability to change it and so it is less risky. I know my art is apart of me, and helps me to understand myself. I was a music major before I switched to graphics, I play the piano and I enjoy singing.

If you want to do freelance, stop thinking about it and do it, you won’t find many people that say they regret it and remember to look up your old contacts as well as search for new ones.
