I’m a New York City Illustrator and Cartoonist. A lot of my work is geared towards children although you won’t get that impression from these samples. I’ve produced a range of work from children’s cereal box illustrations and store displays, to designing fun characters for children’s sleepwear designs, this type work pays the bills. I also enjoy even more doing slightly darker cartoons, drawing odd creatures and people and creating editorial illustration. My styles vary mainly to keep it interesting and I work both digitally and traditionally. I’m happy and fortunate that my youthful doodling has turned into a career.

Jana Gouchev is an artist and art critic in Manhattan. It is clear from her work that Gouchev approaches art as a powerful agent of change. Her paintings, often of a delicately seductive nature, deliver a biting critique of the overall state of society.

From floating red arches, clusters of dried leaves, and canvas made to look like layered stone, Gouchev’s paintings have a humor and feistiness rarely found in art today.

Maintaining that all her work is a reaction to reality, Gouchev’s compositions are actively improvisational. Her art introduces irreverence and, at times, sexual innuendo by punctuating ragged blocks of layered color with darting lines, splatters of ink spread like dance steps, and quasi signs echoing street art.

Jana Gouchev is the founder and editor-in-chief of Notion, the visual arts and fashion magazine, and an editorial manager at The New York Times.

Street Series:

This series focuses on the imperfections of an urban landscape. The artist reveals her experiences of living in Sofia, Bulgaria, and New York City by displaying a concern for the despoliation of both cities by the imposition of boundaries—boundaries set by a former communist government in one city and the silent social borders present in the other.

One piece, titled “Weakness” (2008), depicts a skyline filled with buildings that seem to be fighting for space, much like humans fight to gain or keep their positions, exploiting the weaknesses of others. Thinner black borders in this painting resemble fragile limbs, suggesting the delicate barrier between love and hate. White lines are scattered over the buildings, symbolizing the anxiety and constant electricity in our lives.

Another piece, “Flirting Between Lost & Found” (2008), reveals fewer structures but on a larger scale. The buildings in this piece have much heavier borders, insinuating that these are the thicker-skinned players that won the war in “Weakness.”

Texture prevails in “The Plunge” (2007), the purple cathedral top inflected by the white of breaking light, and the black of malevolence to the left touched by the red glow of a trust in the self.

What this series conveys, apart from its assertive message, is a balance between passion and restraint.

I was born in Newhall California. I currently live in Quartz Hill, Ca. I started showing my paintings in Los Angeles in May of 2007. I have no formal education in the arts outside of a few art classes here and there throughout my childhood education. I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember.

I prefer not to paint anything too real life, I think art is a supplement for the reality of life and we miss the mythology earlier societies had. For me art is creating a form of mythology. Inspired by reality to an extent but also drawing from the empty space.

Most of our life is dedicated to raising our status in one way or another. For most people this means obtaining a high paying career, and acquiring material wealth. Times are changing and an increasing amount of us are leaving the programs of mother culture behind to connect with higher goals.

This movement into the spiritual age is allowing us to connect with each other from a higher plane of consciousness. We are learning to be aware of our own selfish desires so we can overcome them. We are aligning ourselves with a higher purpose, and seeing the world around us in a way that allows us to design our actions to help provide for the whole.

When I speak of spirituality, I am not speaking of religion. I am speaking of a place within each of us where we find the true answers to life’s questions. In this place our motivations are pure, we rise above our selfishness, and our actions are deeper.

My work is meant to confront us with our inner demons so we may understand them, and to make us celebrate those aspects of ourselves which heal the world rather than destroy it.

Through Meditation I am able to channel the energies of each of my paintings. Trough an intuitive process I allow the energies of each painting to work through me.

“Come forth into the light of things. Let nature be your teacher.” … William Wordsworth

My interest has always been in the application of mathematics, and as an extension, computer technology to the creation of art. I have had some formal art training, and in studying composition, I became aware that natural growth patterns can be expressed through simple (and sometimes complex) formulas. As a scientist, mathematician, computer technologist, I attempt to express nature and sometimes pure math concepts in art.

My palate is mathematics, my canvas a computer screen. Works are created as a series of formulas, filters and transformations always with an eye to my current inspiration and basic elements of color and composition. The final rendering is done on a high speed computer, the printing on state-of-the-art wide bed printers.

Subject matter can be a flower, an ice crystal or just last night’s dream. I believe the image I seek already exists and it is my task as an artist to find it and share it.

People are attracted to the colors, playfulness, and the sense of motion in my art.

An ultimate goal is to combine visual arts and musical ideas in a collage of projected images and sound. The first step in this direction was a successful Jazz/Art improvisation at Dominion on Queen this year (2007). The possibilities are as exciting as the process itself.
