Phauxshow is happy to announce its new featured artist: Dmitry Borisov.

Borisov was born in Moscow in 1985 and moved to the US in 1991. He is currently living and working in Los Angeles. Throughout the site, you can view a selection of Borisov’s figure drawings, paintings, and animated videos.

Borisov describes himself as a “re-creator of reality and imagination through a variety of media.” He works by putting an idea on paper and then transforming it into an animation. He is inspired by both the external world and the “subconscious” within him.

When viewing Borisov’s work, be sure to check out his short animation, Ovich. Ovich is an eccentric and likable alcoholic who spends his time driving around town in pursuit of other people’s garbage. In Ovich, Borisov pays a great deal of attention to mood and music. Indeed, after watching the animation a few times, you will find yourself singing the Ovich overture.

As a person, Borisov describes himself as adventurous. He views the artistic process as an “adventure of the mind.” This approach to art reveals itself in his collection of work. The characters in his images and animations express an array of sentiments and personalities. They inspire a sense of curiosity in their audience. You will want to know more about these individuals and the experiences that they share with you.

Borisov’s work is never dull: it is lively, original, and entertaining. It reveals an appreciation of both the dark and humorous elements of life.

He was kind enough to answer some questions for us:

Where are you from? And where are you currently living?

I was born in Moscow, Russia in 1985, six years later my family immigrated to the US. From then onwards we lived pretty much in Buffalo, NY. It was only until recently that I left New York state to come here to L.A. I’m currently living in South Central, but I think that soon I may move closer to West L.A.

What medium do you enjoy working in the most? And why?

I enjoy graphite & Pencil on paper, quick and gesture-like as it’s the traditional way of creating something right off the top of your mind. I like the fast results that come out of sketches. That aside, I enjoy working digitally, both drawing and animating using my Wacom tablet and whatever software that I have (photoshop, flash, aftereffects). My preference is creating narrative and non-conventional 2-D animation when it comes to making things with my computer. All of course is triggered by drawings I create before hand in my sketchbook.

What are your creative goals as an artist? And are there any particular challenges that you face?

My creative goals aren’t too stable I must admit, as they change from one thing to the next every so often. Perhaps this explains my inability to focus on one style or form of art at the moment. There is this unprofessional craving to want to try everything, without realizing that I should focus on one thing and run with it. But as of recently, I really want to get into professional storyboarding and work with films or animations. That is my current goal.

As an artist, it’s difficult managing the time that I spend creating art for creativity’s sake and spending time working at my part-time job, or the freelance work that I get now and then. There are so many ideas that I’d want to implement and as always not enough time for them to come life.

We love your short animated film, Ovich. Could you tell us a little bit about it? What inspired you to create it?

Ovich is a unique character. He’s also an alcoholic, who under the influence, finds a fascination with everyone else’s garbage. I created him a few years back taking into consideration a very similar lifestyle of my own immigrant father in some ways. Driving around, drinking and collecting junk off the streets were only some of the few details that I had planned to incorporate into this comical depiction of one person’s life. This is not a typical animation I would say, as I tried to focus more on the subtle atmosphere of the piece, like the sound and music to intentionally set the mood and then follow through with the story.

How would you describe your art? Is your art a refection of you
as a person?

I am but a re-creator of reality and imagination through a variety of media. I take an idea and put it on paper, and then from paper take it a step higher and produce an animation. In the end result, what I come up with may even surprise me. Inspired by the world around me and by the abstract subconscious within me, my work presents itself best through personal interpretation of the viewer.

Which of your pieces are you most satisfied with? And why?

There is one animation that I completely rotoscoped called, “Dim Boxer” (it can be seen on my site here). I really enjoyed the end result, transforming video into simple lines that danced in a fascinating way on the white background screen.

Is there anything else that we should know about you?

I have an adventurous spirit, and maybe that allows me to imagine art as an adventure of the mind as well; a limitless adventure that anyone is free to experience… I think that’s all that comes to my mind right now.
