Dmitry Borisov

I am currently living in Los Angeles, moved here from Buffalo NY, not more than 3 months ago in hopes of starting an exciting life out here surrounded by all sorts of media/animation and film-like opportunities. Though I am struggling to find my place here and do exactly what I came here to do (job-wise) I manage with a part-time job at a bookstore and even less time devoted to Freelance work that I do.

On Freelance:

As far as freelance artwork and animation, I have worked with a few people on various projects, one of them being my professor and mentor Sylvie Belanger who teaches at the University at Buffalo and is also a Canadian artist. With other clients I have worked on public announcement animations, web graphics and even animation for a farming equipment company.

I prefer of course the creative side of things and the jobs that come with that extra feature, but a freelance is a business similar to many others where you need your clients just as much as they need you. At the moment I am trying to get into illustrating children’s books and see how that works out for me.

Education:

My education took place in Buffalo at The University at Buffalo, where I enrolled into the Fine Arts program. After the first year I focussed on digital arts and decided to pursue animation over other forms. I spent my sophomore Spring semester in Moscow, Russia studying abroad and reconnecting back with my country. I have great affinity for my homeland and would love perhaps to someday move back. There is so much culture, music, writing and history that I admire but perhaps it is the people that I love most. One such person happens to be a Russian immigrant character seen in my animation called “Ovich.” Though a lot of my work is different, I would like to create more animation in that same Ovich-like narrative style. It is a painterly 2 Dimensional look that I seem to like the most. Perhaps influenced a bit by one of Russia’s greatest animators Yuri Norstein.

Now a bit about my past:

I was born in Moscow, Russia in 1985 and remember a little of my childhood past, living in the old Soviet Union. When communism collapsed (6 years later), my family and I immigrated to the United States. For the most part of the rest of my later years we lived in New York state.

Conclusively speaking…

I enjoy life in the manner that it offers itself and am ready to experience more of it everyday. There is no adventure that I will not take and no art form that I will not try, whether it’s performance, oil painting or writing poetry. I’ve been told that although my work and the styles I work with vary from piece to piece, overall It is over toned with a bleak or dark outlook on life. Perhaps a bit too serious for some and borderline depressing for others. Once I remember being asked “Why don’t you ever draw something pretty and nice?” I responded that I didn’t know how to.

  1. Dmitry,

Ovich is hilarious. I would like to see what happens to him next.

Your art is fantastic. I hope that you create more of it.

  2. Thank you James, This is quite amazing what Pierrot put together here for me. I am very thankful, and thank you again for the commentary. I will make more Ovich’s in the future no doubt.
